Studio Art Courses (Grades 9-12)
2-D Studio Art
In the two-dimensional classes, students develop skills in drawing, painting, mixed media, art history, and overall art appreciation through three courses: 2D Art I, 2D Art II, and 2D Portfolio Preparation. Students’ progress from foundational techniques — such as cartooning in a sketchbook using pencil — to more advanced techniques in acrylic paint, pen, marker, colored pencil, mixed media, watercolor, and graphic design. Each course builds directly on the skills developed in the previous course, so that by the end of the second or third semester of 2D art, students have assembled a cohesive portfolio ready for submission to colleges, universities, or potential employers. All students receive a sketchbook upon payment of the lab fee and are encouraged to continue creating art outside the classroom throughout the semester. All students are required to exhibit work in the school art show held each year.
3-D Studio Art
In the three-dimensional classes, students are given the opportunity to design and construct three-dimensional work, with ceramics offered as the program's core pathway. Across a four-level sequence (Ceramics I–IV), students’ progress from foundational hand-building and wheel-throwing skills to advanced technique and personal artistic expression, learning methods such as throwing on the potter's wheel, pinch and coil pots, clay sculpture, plates, and slab boxes. Problem solving runs throughout the pathway, as students plan, construct, and troubleshoot three-dimensional forms from concept to finished piece. All students are required to exhibit work in the school art show held each year.
There is a $35 Lab Fee for all Studio Art courses.
